I hate the way they slither. I hate the way their tongues are all long and slimy. I hate the way they coil. I hate the way they can live underground and climb fences and fit into small holes. I hate that I don't know how to defend myself against them. But most of all, I hate that in the past two days I have seen two of them within mere inches of myself.
Common Kingsnake
One that looked like this just crawled out of the ground in our backyard. Chris was back there measuring and trying to map out some landscaping. I was on the phone with Shayla and out of the corner of my eye I saw it. I may have let out a very girly yelp and Chris told me to grow up. I told him we may as well not even do anything with the backyard because I am NOT going out there with those things. I instantly came inside to google "snakes in Arizona". I want to know what I am up against. After looking at all the pictures I may never leave my house again. Did I mention that I really really really hate snakes?
PS I don't ever suggest googleing snakes in your state. There are apparently over 50 kinds of various disgusting shapes, sizes, and colors. I probably won't sleep for weeks.

yikes! now google how to repel them :)
Did Chris tell you the story of how I ran out of the house with Tyler (he was a baby) when Emily and Jason told me there was one coming up our stairs...in the house. I called Terry and told him I wasn't sleeping there until the snake was out. It ended up being really stupid to have run out of the house because the snake couldn't be found for 2 days. I'm feeling your pain Linzi!
At least it wasn't a rattle snake. . . We've seen poison toads, lizards, lots of bunnies and jack rabbits, a tarantella and a coyote, but no snakes.
Oh dear...if you guys don't get this snake-thing under control Tyler won't ever let us come down there. Eli says about 10 times a day, "My daddy doesn't like snakes." It's common knowledge around here. ;)
Someone told me about this a few weeks ago. Grossed me out! http://www.theledger.com/article/20110615/NEWS/110619621
I feel your pain! After our little snake encounter, I'm afraid to let Ava wander farther than 2 feet from we. Why can't they just stay in their wilderness space and we can stay in our homes/backyards! Both of us could be happy that way. :)
